Before She Becomes a Leader, A Mother, An Entrepreneur, or An Advocate, She Is a Girl

On October 11, the world will celebrate International Day of the Girl, a day dedicated to recognizing girls' rights, amplifying their voices, and highlighting the opportunities they need to thrive.

At Humanity for Children, that mission resonates deeply with our work.

For more than 20 years, we've partnered with communities across East Africa to improve health, expand educational opportunities, empower women, and create healthier living environments. We know that when a girl has access to education, healthcare, safety, and opportunity, her future expands in ways that benefit entire families and communities.

In the Maasai communities where we work, today's girl may become tomorrow's teacher, healthcare worker, business owner, community leader, or mother. But reaching that future requires support at every stage of life.

That's why our programs take a holistic approach.

Through our Education & Youth Empowerment initiatives, we help create opportunities for children and young people to learn, grow, and build brighter futures. Through Maternal & Newborn Health programs, we help ensure that women and babies receive safe, dignified care. Through Women's Empowerment & Advocacy initiatives, we partner with women and girls to strengthen their voices, opportunities, and roles within their communities.

One important part of that work is our Menstrual Hygiene Management program. Through open conversations about puberty, confidence, menstrual health, education, and harmful traditional practices such as FGM, we help girls navigate adolescence with knowledge, dignity, and support. We also provide mentorship opportunities and encourage girls to stay in school, pursue their education, and see themselves as leaders capable of shaping their own futures.

As International Day of the Girl approaches, we're celebrating not only the girls we serve today but also the women they will become.

Because empowering girls doesn't just change individual lives.

It changes communities for generations.
