Education, Dignity, and Hope for Adolescent Girls
At Humanity for Children (HFC), we believe every girl deserves the opportunity to grow up healthy, confident, educated, and empowered to achieve her dreams.
HFC team member Sarah Lengai recently visited Irkisalie Primary School to lead a mentorship session for adolescent girls. The visit created a safe and supportive space where girls could openly discuss challenges affecting their lives and gain practical knowledge to help them navigate their journey toward adulthood.
During the session, the girls explored important topics including personal hygiene, menstrual health, puberty, self-confidence, self-esteem, child protection, personal safety, and setting goals for the future. They also discussed the harmful effects of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), early marriage, early pregnancy, and peer pressure, while learning how these issues can impact their education and future opportunities.
A key message throughout the session was simple but powerful: education is one of the strongest tools a girl can use to shape her future. The girls were encouraged to stay focused on their studies, believe in their potential, and seek guidance from trusted adults whenever they face challenges.
While engaging with the students, HFC identified an urgent need for sanitary pads. For many girls, a lack of menstrual hygiene supplies can affect their comfort, confidence, and ability to fully participate in school activities.
To address this challenge, HFC has begun coordinating efforts to provide sanitary pads to the girls in the coming weeks. This support will help ensure that girls can manage their menstrual health with dignity while continuing their education without interruption.
The mentorship session was a reminder that when girls are equipped with knowledge, encouragement, and essential resources, they are better positioned to overcome obstacles and pursue their goals.
